St. Mary's Church, Leederville, founded in 1888, stands as an iconic historical landmark in Perth. Designed by renowned architect Michael Cavanagh, the Gothic Revival stone church was constructed in 1923-1924. Its striking architecture, intricate stonework, and beautiful stained glass windows make it a visual masterpiece.
Throughout its history, St. Mary's has been a place of worship, community, and cultural significance. It hosts religious services, weddings, and community events, preserving its heritage. A symbol of faith and history, St. Mary's Church remains a cherished part of Leederville's past and present
Early Beginnings:In 1903, the Sisters of Mercy from West Perth established a convent and school in Marian Street, Leederville, known today as Aranmore. The school quickly became an integral part of the community. By 1904, a weatherboard building was constructed on the grounds, and Mass was celebrated there every Sunday.
Parish Establishment:On March 1, 1919, the Leederville Parish was formally established, and it welcomed its first parish priest, Father Moloney. Father Moloney, originally from Limerick, Ireland, brought a rich educational background with him, having been educated by the Christian Brothers in Charville, France, and studying philosophy at Mt Melleray. Prior to his assignment in Leederville, he had served as a curate at St. Mary's Cathedral in Perth and had been a parish priest in various locations, including Busselton, York, Victoria Park, Menzies, and Wagin. Father Moloney dedicated many years of his life to the Leederville Parish, leaving a lasting legacy.
Construction and Blessing of St. Mary's Leederville Church:Over the years, the parish grew, and the need for a dedicated church building became evident. The Church of St. Mary's Leederville was completed with extensions and was formally blessed and opened on February 13, 1938, by the Most Rev. Patrick Joseph Clune, the Fourth Bishop and First Archbishop of Perth. This event marked a significant milestone in the parish's history, providing a permanent place of worship and spiritual growth for its members.
The Bell's Legacy:A special piece of history that resonates with the church's connection to Ireland is its bell. The bell, which rings faithfully every Sunday morning, was cast at the O'Byrne Foundry in Dublin in 1928. It is believed to have been ordered when the original plans for the church were drawn up. The bell's melodic toll has been a comforting and familiar sound for generations of parishioners.
Today, St. Mary's Parish in Leederville continues to thrive, honoring its rich history while remaining a vibrant and welcoming center of worship, community, and faith for the people it serves.
